As one aspect of the ʻĀina-Based Education Community of Practice -- modeled loosely after Environmental Education Certificate programs in other areas of the United States -- we are developing Hawaiʻi's own ʻĀina-Based Education Certificate.
A grassroots, ground-up effort!
What: The 'Aina-Based Education (ABE) Certificate is a way to recognize and reward educators and students who deepen their learning about and demonstrate stewardship and care for the 'āina as an active practice.
Why: ABE Certificates will elevate ABE as a foundational part of education in our schools and communities and engage people in life-long learning to sustain Hawaiiʻs unique environment, culture, and people.
How: ABE Certificates may be earned in various ways, with the specific type depending on the participant's experience and the program's nature. Approved ABE organizations will issue these certificates as they deliver programs consistent with the spirit of ABE. As participants progress through the field, they may earn multiple certificates. Seasoned and respected ABE practitioners may be nominated to earn Honorary ABE Certificates.
Who: Designed to serve formal educators (teachers) and non-formal educators (e.g. educators at non-profits and government agencies) as well as students grades 10 and up throughout Hawai'i.
Pins are given to exemplary participants.
